New alliance aims to stamp out jobs scams

The National Trading Standards eCrime Team (NTSeCT) has joined SAFERjobs and the Metropolitan Police in the fight against online jobs scams.

SAFERjobs (Safe Advice For Employment and Recruitment) is a non-profit making organisation created by the Metropolitan Police in 2008 to combat criminal activity plaguing the recruitment market.

SAFERjobs works with government, public sector agencies and private sector companies to stamp out recruitment related crime. To do this it shares best practice, offers free expert advice, and raises awareness of job scams and fraudulent practice within the recruitment industry.

Over the next year, NTSeCT will work closely with SAFERjobs to share intelligence and take action against criminals and rogue traders who exploit vulnerable job seekers using social media, online advertising, classified job listings sites and job forums.

Keith Rosser, Chair of SAFERjobs said:

“Job scams are on the rise, with many people looking for work via online job boards and social networking sites, it is becoming even more important the UK develops a robust response and offers free advice to job seekers. Developing a partnership with Trading Standards is an essential part of a combined response to the problem of fraudsters targeting job seekers.”

Mike Andrews, the national co-ordinator for the National Trading Standards eCrime Team said:

“We are pleased to be joining the network of organisations that SAFERjobs has developed to protect jobseekers and people working in the recruitment industry. Criminals and rogue traders are increasingly targeting online job seekers with a variety of job scams through many online channels, and it is important we work together to stamp it out.”

As part of our mission to create a level playing field for business, the National Trading Standards eCrime Team will do all it can to help SAFERjobs prevent jobseekers falling foul of these scams, and hunt down and prosecute those who disrupt the working of the jobs market generally.”
